Phonics

We use Read Write Inc as a basis for our phonics programme at Sacred Heart. Children take part in daily phonics sessions, often within a small group. Children learn to recognise and say the sound that is represented by each letter or groups of letters. These are called 'speed sounds'. Children also learn how to blend the sounds together in a word to read it, eg. c-a-t is 'cat'. It is important that children use pure sounds so that they are able to blend the sounds easily. When we are saying words in pure sounds we call it 'Fred Talk'. Children learn to read real words and also nonsense words by saying the sounds that they can see in the word. We call the nonsense words 'alien words'. The sounds are arranged into groups - Set 1, Set 2 and Set 3.

Children also learn to read lots of words by sight; eg. like, come, would. These words cannot be read by blending the sounds together. These words are called red words - 'you can't Fred a red'!

When writing each of the letter sounds, children are taught to use the correct letter formation with the help of fun phrases.

Speed Sounds Sets 1, 2 and 3

The video demonstrates the correct pronunciation of speed sounds Sets 1, 2 and 3, with a focus on the 'pure' sound it makes and allows children to go through each set independently.
A great revision resource for children to practise at home and to support parents in teaching the 'pure' sound as opposed to the letter names. By encouraging your child to say the 'pure' sound they are able to blend the sound more easily in words to read independently.

One family, growing together in love and faith, flourishing in an ever-changing world. We love, we believe, we shine, we achieve.
