Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School

Autumn 1

Week 4 - week beginning 25th September

In Class 5 this week, we've been doing assessments. Alongside this, we've made sure to have plenty of fun too! We had a day at St Pius where we spent time learning to play keyboards, identifying acids and alkalis in science and, finally, looking at probability in maths!

Back at Sacred Heart, we continued our learning about Ancient Egypt, focusing on important monuments they built. Did you know that historians think it took approximately 20 years to build the Great Pyramid of Giza?

Some members of our class, along with members of Class 4, took part in the Dearne area qualifying round for the Totty Cup, Barlow-Salmons and Brian Hyde cups. They performed brilliantly against tough opposition and came third, going through to the Barlow-Salmons Shield.

Here are some photos from our time at St Pius:

Week 3 - week beginning 18th September

This week, in Class 5, we've come to the end of our maths unit about place value! Our final objectives were all about rounding and negative numbers. Now that we're feeling confident with this, it's time for our next unit: the four operations!

Within our Literacy lessons, we've been focusing on verbs this week, learning all about the different types and becoming more confident at identifying them. We've continued reading our class book, The Nowhere Emporium, and it's safe to say that the plot is getting more exciting!

As part of our science learning linked to electricity, we explored what happens to bulbs within a simple circuit when voltage is increased.

Week 2 - week beginning 11th September

Our history work this week was all about the river Nile! We learnt about why it was so important to ancient Egyptians and how they utilised it. Ask us to tell you something they used it for!

Our art and design unit for this half term is focused on various art skills, and this week we were learning about a type of art called Zentangle. We had a great time exploring patterns that we could see within our own environment and creating zentangles utilising them (you'll find some photos at the bottom of this post showing some of our designs).

Spoiler: you'll see more of our zentangles later in this unit!

Week 1 - week beginning 4th September

It's the start of another year! We've had a great start to our time together in Class 5, jumping straight into our learning for this year. Highlights include starting our PE unit linked to handball and getting the paints out for the start of our art and design unit!

We also started reading our first class novel together, 'The Nowhere Emporium' by Ross Mackenzie. So far so good... although there's definitely something mysterious about it!

Most importantly, Gary (our class pet) is ready and raring to go this year too! Here he is, excited to meet his new classmates!

One family, growing together in love and faith, flourishing in an ever-changing world. We love, we believe, we shine, we achieve.
