General Things

Phonics

Children will be placed in appropriate phonics groups once assessments are completed.  Children will follow the Read Write Inc. phonics scheme. In their groups, children will be taught to read accurately and fluently with good comprehension. They will learn to form each letter, spell correctly, and compose their ideas step-by-step.

Reading

Children will read a book in school with an adult. They are given books that are phonetically matched to their progress. The same book will be sent home that week. Children might start with picture books to start with. Please discuss the pictures or read the story with your child for about 5-10 minutes discussing key characters, events and settings.  Books with text will be introduced as children learn more sounds.

We recommend you re-read the same book with your child at home at least 3 times a week for up to 15 minutes. In the early stages it often takes up more than 3 reads for children to become fluent and fully understand what it is they are reading. Do not forget to write a brief comment in your child's Home/ School Diary under the Home Reading Record section.

Depending on their reading ability, some children will often bring a second book, which is phonetically decodable book that contains sounds that the children are familiar with. Please make sure your child brings their school bag everyday with their reading book and Home/ School Diary. We will also be reading a lot of books in school during Story time.  Here is a list of our Core stories.

Core stories are stories we will keep revisiting throughout the year. By the time your child leaves Class 1, they will hopefully know these stories well.

Class 1 Core stories:

The Gruffalo – Julia Donaldson & Axel Scheffler; The Three Little pigs; Owl Babies – Martin Waddell; The Tiger Who Came to Tea – Judith Kerr; The Little Red Hen; Handa’s Surprise – Eileen Browne; Beegu – Alexis Deacon ; We’re going on a bear hunt – Michael Rosen ; The Very Hungry Caterpillar- Eric  Carle;  Supertato- Sue Hendra; The Way Back Home- Oliver Jeffers and Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

We will also read Read Write Inc Talk Through Stories books. For a list of these books for each half term, please take a look at the Medium Term Plans.

Homework

Homework will be in the form of Phonics QR codes. Your child will bring a sheet with the QR codes for that week. This will be stuck in the Orange QR Code book. By simply scanning the QR codes, they will be taken to a Read write Inc video where a trained phonics teacher will deliver a phonics lesson. Simply note down above the QR Codes or underneath, which sounds your child would have practiced. Your child to get 10 credits for each practiced sound piece of work completed.

P.E

P.E is on Monday afternoon. Please make sure your child brings an appropriate P.E kit including a warm tracksuit and trainers/pumps - we will be outside whenever the weather allows it. Please ensure all their kit and uniform are labelled. Also, please bring a water bottle to stay hydrated!

Weekly updates for each half term will be added under the relevant tabs below
