Summer 1

Week 5

This week, we have continued exploring our Guided Reading book ‘An Alien in the Jam Factory’. In chapter 5, Scooter established rules with Fizzbee the alien, whilst she slurped up all of the jam from the vats with a very long straw. Children have enjoyed the humour within this week’s chapter and have explored VIPERS skills throughout the week, unpicking new information each day.

In Literacy this week, we have developed further interest and intrigue for the Queen with the platinum jubilee approaching. Children have researched the Queen to create a fact file this week, finding out key information such as her birthday, where she was born and where she lives. Children were particularly interested to find out the Queen’s favourite animal, food and colour.

In Maths, children have explored time and position this week. Year 3 children have continued exploring time further, looking at duration and Year 4 have explored coordinates on a grid and the positioning of varying shapes. Children have shown great progress within the mentioned areas. Well done!

In Art, Class 3 explored the artists Banksy and Keith Haring. Children printed brick backgrounds, inspired by Banksy’s graffiti and printed their very own movement figures on top to emulate the work of Keith Haring. Additionally, Class 3 have explored collage work this week inspired by Henry Matisse, creating a red, white and blue union jack collage.

Well done Class 3!

Have a wonderful half term.

Week 4

This week, we have continued exploring our Guided Reading book ‘An Alien in the Jam Factory’. In chapter 4, Class 3 explored Fizzbee further, the unexpected guest that crashed into Scooter’s jam factory. Children have explored VIPERS skills throughout the week, unpicking exciting new information about the book.

In Literacy this week, we have continued reading The Lost Thing. Children have completed a detailed diary entry as the main character Shaun, sharing information about his recent discovery of the lost thing. Additionally, children have explored key features of a newspaper, in order to write their very own article next week.

In Maths, children have explored time and position this week. Year 3 children have continued exploring time further, looking at duration and Year 4 have explored coordinates on a grid and the positioning of varying shapes.

In Science this week, Class 3 have learnt about the fossilisation process. Children used visual support to identify and order pictures representing the fossilisation process and then explain the process with further detail to a friend.

In Art, Class 3 explored the figures created by Keith Haring which often inspired his movement art. Class 3 used split pins to create their own flexible figure, allowing children to explore differing positions and poses to include within their very own movement art.

Well done Class 3!

Have a fantastic weekend.

Week 3

This week, we have continued exploring our Guided Reading book ‘An Alien in the Jam Factory’. In chapter 3, Class 3 investigated the arrival of an unexpected guest, Fizzbee the alien. Children have explored VIPERS skills throughout the week, unpicking exciting new information about the book.

In Literacy this week, we have continued reading The Lost Thing. Children have applied all of the previously learnt skills, such as writing in the first person, the present perfect tense and simple past tense to write a diary entry as our main character Shaun, sharing information about his day discovering the Lost Thing at the beach.

In Maths, children have explored time. Both year 3 and year 4 children have worked hard to tell the time to 5 minutes this week, looking at both past and to times. Children have used clocks to practice time further with their peers and further their understanding.

In Science this week, Class 3 have identified natural and man

made rocks. New scientific vocabulary was introduced, such as igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. Children explored key events that happen to form natural rocks, along with their purpose and uses within everyday life.

In Art, Class 3 explored the figures created by Keith Haring which often inspired his movement art. In addition to this, we explored the nature of Banksy’s graffiti work and how he often explores differing backgrounds and surfaces. Children explored differing background patters to upscale their work this week.

Well done Class 3!

Have a wonderful weekend.

Week 2

Class 3 have worked very hard this week.

This week, we have continued reading our Guided Reading book ‘An Alien in the Jam Factory’. In chapter 2, Class 3 discovered the McLay’s neighbour and enemy, Daffy Dodgy. Children have explored VIPERS skills throughout the week, unpicking exciting new information.

In Literacy this week, we have continued reading The Lost Thing. Children have focused on writing in the present perfect tense this week, along with writing in the first person to create a postcard. We have watched the animation for The Lost Thing to further our descriptive writing and explanations.

In Maths, children have explored capacity, along with decimals. Children have faced multiple step problems to apply knowledge and understanding learnt previously. Year 3 children have focussed specifically on the conversion of grams and kilograms and Year 4 children have explored decimals and place value.

In Science this week, Class 3 have explored differing types of soils and their strengths, weaknesses and characteristics. New vocabulary was introduced, such as permeability and nutrients. Children explored new vocabulary to explain their understanding to peers within the class.

In ICT this week, we have continued to explore branch databases. Children engaged in paired work and class games to further their understanding of branch databases and used 2Question to complete an electronic version of their rehearsed database.

In Art, Class 3 explored the figures created by Keith Haring which often inspired his movement art. We looked at developing our understanding of shape, along with exploration of colour combinations.

Well done Class 3 for all of your hard work this week!

Have a fantastic weekend.

Week 1

Class 3 have had a great first week back.

This week, we have started reading our new Guided Reading book ‘An Alien in the Jam Factory’. So far, the children have found out that Scooter, a boy with cerebral palsy, has a very creative imagination and a slight obsession with making many different flavours of jam. Children have explored VIPERS skills throughout the week when reading chapter 1.

In Literacy this week, we have looked at our new focus book ‘The Lost Thing’ by Shaun Tan. Our first discovery within this book was a mysterious postcard on the back that Shaun had written to his best friend Pete, sharing his adventure when discovering the lost thing. Children have worked very hard to apply inference skills to the first two pages of the book this week, along with exploring exciting adjective, similes and creating their very own lost poster for their recreations of the lost thing.

In Maths, children have explored capacity, along with multiplication and division. Children have faced multiple step problems to apply knowledge and understanding learnt previously. Year 3 children have focussed specifically on the conversion of litres and millilitres and Year 4 children have explored multiplication and division.

In Science this week, Class 3 have launched into our new topic of Rocks and Soils. Children have explored sensory trays including coal, black basalt, shells, fossils, crab claws and much more to identify objects we may explore throughout this unit. It was great fun discovering differing objects and exploring new vocabulary such as igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic.

In ICT this week, we explored branch databases. Children learnt that a branch database often includes key questions, followed by a yes or no response in order to find out key information. Children engaged in paired work and class games to further their understanding of branch databases this week.

In Art, Class 3 were introduced to their focus artists of this half term, Keith Haring and Banksy. We explored the artists, learnt about their history and the style of work they produce. Children also identified key features within pieces of art, exploring shape, lines, colour and meaning behind pieces of art.

Finally, I would like to thank our Young Voices choir for their fantastic efforts on Wednesday evening at Sheffield arena. What an amazing experience it was!

Well done Class 3 for all of your hard work this week!

Have a brilliant weekend.
