Autumn 1

Week 7

Class 5 have had another great week! These are some highlights of our week!

Topic - We deepened our understanding of the culture in Ancient Egypt by looking at their burial practices, including mummification! Then, we wrote diaries entries as if we were canopic jars watching the process unfold. They're proudly up on display and you can see them in our photos!

PE - We carried on with our handball unit and had a fantastic match using our passing, shooting and defending skills we've learnt. In our fitness lesson, we did some circuit work, focusing on different muscle groups. There are some photos of us in action!

Science - We learnt about electrical insulators and conductors and carried out some practical work to discover what type of materials are usually conductors. We tested a wide variety of materials: kitchen foil, fabric, paperclips, wood, plastic bags, metal spoons and more!

Week 6

This week, in Class 5, we've been working our way through the four operations in maths. We tackled long multiplication and short division this week - next week, it's time for long division!! We've got this!

Since we've finished our adverts in Literacy, we started our new unit all about non-chronological reports. We've been focusing on grammar skills that will be helpful, learning more about the text type and we've already written our introductions!

I really wanted to show you our 'Proud of your Shelf' display in class. Whenever children feel proud of work they've done (in any subject) they can request a 'shelfie' and get their work displayed. This is the first time since the beginning of Year 6 that the board has been completely full all at once. I'm so proud of this class for working so hard and being proud of what they can do!

Week 5

This week in Class 5, we spent our time in Literacy editing and proof-reading our persuasive adverts. We've written up our final versions and I'll be sharing photos next week of some of them on display!

In maths, we've started our second unit of Year 6, which is all about the four operations! Next week will see us move on to look at long multiplication and long division.

In ICT this week, we re-capped online safety and then focused in on location services, discussing the positives and negatives.

Week 4

This week, in Literacy, we've been writing up the main paragraphs for our adverts all about the Winter Palace Hotel. Next week, we'll be putting it all together and I can't wait to show you some of their finished adverts.

On Thursday, we had a visit to St Pius and took part in art, maths and English lessons. We had an absolutely brilliant time! In art, we were taught how to use pastels to create a drawing of a doughnut that looks good enough to eat! Check out the photo to see for yourself!

Week 3

Class 5 have had another fantastic week! We enjoyed starting our first Year 6 literacy unit, which is linked to our topic about ancient civilisations. We've been researching the Winter Palace Hotel in Egypt because this is a location in our class book - Secrets of a Sun King. We can't wait to show you the finished adverts!

In PE this week, we focused on 5 core areas of fitness: agility, speed, balance, co-ordination and strength. Each section of our circuit tested one of these skills, and you can see us in action in the photos from this week!

We also started learning our first song on Charanga, 'Happy' by Pharrell Williams. We'll be posting a video soon to show you how we're getting on with it.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Week 2

We've had another great week in Class 5! We've had our first go at a Year 6 assessment week, and the effort that has been shown in class has been incredible.

As well as that, we started looking at our topic about ancient civilisations and began learning about electricity in science too.

We ended our week by looking at the book 'The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse' by Charlie Mackesy. In order to create our own artwork in his style, we learnt about the way he sketches, and we also considered the kind of messages he spreads with the quotes he uses. Here are some photos of our finished artwork!

Week 1

We have had a great start to the school year in Class 5 this week! We've spent time getting to know each other, but, we've also made sure to spend time getting to know our class pet Gary the giant African land snail. Each table had to research facts about him, including diet, habitat and how to handle him. These pages will go into our Gary Guide so that we can look after him properly.

As well as this, we've used our artistic skills to make a classroom display! We read the book 'The Dot' and then created our own dots in different colours.

I hope you all have a fantastic weekend! See you Monday!
