General Things
Phonics
Children will be placed in appropriate phonics groups once assessments are completed. Children will follow the Read Write Inc. phonics scheme. In their groups, children will be taught to read accurately and fluently with good comprehension. They will learn to form each letter, spell correctly, and compose their ideas step-by-step.
Reading
Children will read a book in school with an adult. They are given books that are phonetically matched to their progress. The same book will be sent home that week. This might be a picture book to start with. Please discuss the pictures or read the story with your child for about 5-10 minutes discussing key characters, events and settings.
We recommend you re-read the same book with your child at home at least 3 times a week for up to 15 minutes. In the early stages it often takes up more than 3 reads for children to become fluent and fully understand what it is they are reading. Do not forget to write a brief comment in your child's Reading Record book.
There will be rewards for children who consistently bring their book bag
and books to school every day.
Depending on their reading ability, some children will often bring a second book, which is to be shared to them by an adult. Please make sure your child brings their school bag everyday with their reading book and Reading Record. We will also be reading a lot of books in school during Story time. We have many Core Stories and Talk Through Stories which are stories we will keep revisiting throughout the year. By the time your child leaves Class 1, they will hopefully know these stories well.
Homework
Every week reading related homework will be set. This will sometimes be in the form of Phonics QR codes. Your child will bring a sheet with the QR codes for that week. This will be stuck in the Reading Record. By simply scanning the QR codes, they will be taken to a Read write Inc video where a trained phonics teacher will deliver a phonics lesson.
PE KITS are needed on WEDNESDAYS but can be left in school all week and NO EARRINGS for PE. Correct PE kit MUST be worn.
WATER BOTTLES: Your child needs a water bottle in school every day. Please ensure that bottles only contain water.
