Week 8
This week, children have read a text called The Gift. The Gift is about a boy named Marty with a very strong sense of hearing. Children have applied their knowledge of VIPERS skills when exploring the text to develop further understanding of new vocabulary, prediction, retrieval and inference.
In Literacy this week, children have researched a significant person from Anglo Saxon Britain. Children have ensured that we are working on including co-ordinating conjunctions within our work.
In Maths, children have explored subtraction this week. Children have exchanged when using 4- and 5-digit numbers.
In History this week, children have explored significant people and the impact that they had on Anglo Saxon Britain.
In Spanish, children have explored colours.
In Science, children have studied electrical safety.
Sacred Heart have held a Times Table Rock Stars competition this week, in which children battled to achieve the highest accuracy within a tournament. After such hard work and determination, Class 4 have been crowned the winners!

Week 7
This week, children have read an informative text about animal hearing. Children have applied their knowledge of VIPERS skills when exploring the text to develop further understanding of new vocabulary, prediction, retrieval and inference.
In Art this week, children have studied willow pattern plates. Encouraged by the story telling factor of this, children created their very own creation inspired by a familiar childhood story.
In Literacy this week, children have continued to work hard to identify subjects, verbs and left overs within a paragraph. Children have also continued to explore the use of commas when left overs are at the beginning of a sentence.
In Maths, children have focused on addition this week. Children have worked hard to remember column method and the importance of exchange when adding 4-digit numbers.
In History this week, children have had the wonderful opportunity to study our community’s local history. Children have explored our history of mining and the impact this had on the local area.
In RHE, children shared information about how to stay healthy both physically and mentally. We talked about the importance of a healthy diet, exercise and making time for the activities that we love and enjoy.

Week 6
This week, children have read an informative text about how we hear sound. Children have applied their knowledge of VIPERS skills when exploring the text to develop further understanding of new vocabulary, prediction, retrieval and inference.
In Art this week, children have further explored optical illusions. Children selected 2 differing, contrasting images to create a very interesting piece of art work.
In Literacy this week, children have worked hard to identify subjects, verbs and left overs within independent clauses. Children have also explored the use of commas this week.
In Maths, children have continued to focus on rounding, along with studying negative numbers within word problems this week.
In Science this week, children have included conductors and insulators within a circuit to see what impact they have.
In History this week, children have researched village life in Anglo Saxon Britain. Children learnt about varying jobs and responsibilities.
In Spanish, children have learnt about parts of the body.

Week 5
This week, children have read an informative text about sound. Children have applied their knowledge of VIPERS skills when exploring the text to develop further understanding of new vocabulary, retrieval and inference.
In Art this week, children have continued to explore the art work of Paul Cezanne. We studied the use of block colours and applied this within our own painting activity.
In Literacy this week, children have worked hard to identify subjects and verbs within independent clauses.
In Maths, children have focused on rounding this week. We have rounded to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000.
In Science this week, children have learnt about conductors and insulators.
In History this week, children have explored the crests or badges of the 7 kingdoms of Anglo Saxon Britain, along with varying tribes that arrived in Britain and where they came from.
Children in Class 4 have also thoroughly enjoyed Times Table Rock Stars this week – lots of our children have received certificates for their fantastic efforts. We are working on fluency, accuracy and speed.

Week 4
This week, children have read an instruction text about crime and punishment in Anglo Saxon Britain. Children have applied their knowledge of VIPERS skills when exploring the text to develop further understanding of new vocabulary, retrieval and inference.
In Art this week, children have explored the art work of Paul Cezanne. We studied the use of block colours inspired by his work.
In Literacy this week, children have completed many place value for punctuation and grammar tasks about verbs, such as regular and irregular verbs, to be verbs and when doubling a consonant is required.
In Maths, children have continued to focus on place value this week. Children have applied prior learning to order and compare numbers.
In Science this week, children have learnt about day-to-day items that conduct electricity.
In History this week, children have learnt about the 7 kingdoms of Anglo Saxon Britain, along with push and pull factors contributing to their arrival – such as flooded homeland, being invited, more space and more crops.
Children in Class 4 have also enjoyed learning about Macmillan and the importance of charity this week. Children designed their vary own baked goods as we discussed why contributing to our community is important.

Week 3
This week, children have read an instruction text about how to raid an Anglo Saxon settlement. Children have applied their knowledge of VIPERS skills when exploring the text to develop further understanding of new vocabulary.
In Art this week, children have continued to learn about still life art.
In Literacy this week, children have completed many place value for punctuation and grammar tasks about varying nouns, such as common, proper, collective and partitive nouns.
In Maths, children have continued to focus on place value this week.
In Science this week, children have completed varying circuits including differing amounts of bulbs and batteries to see if they would be successful or not – we also considered if they were unsuccessful, why this may be.
In History this week, children have created a timeline sharing previously studied time periods, along with new (Anglo Saxons and the Scots).

Week 2
This week, children have read a text about the Anglo-Saxon invasion of Britain. Children have applied their knowledge of VIPERS skills when exploring the text to develop further understanding of new vocabulary.
In Art this week, children have continued to explore optical illusions, along with still life art. We have studied the art work of Giorgio Morandi and applied such techniques within our own work.
In Literacy this week, children have continued to embed essential expectations within our writing, such as capital letters, full stops, commas letter formation and legibility.
In Maths, children have continued focused on place value this week. Children have explored varying pictorial representations for numbers up to 1,000,000, recapping flexible partitioning within numeral and written format.
In Science this week, children have explored making a simple circuit. Children have ensured that circuits included a bulb, battery and wires. Some children chose to add a motor – this led to our class investigating whether 1 battery would supply enough power for all components.
In History this week, children completed a pre-assessment about Anglo-Saxon Britain. We also watched an interesting video, sharing the beliefs of the Anglo-Saxons and how charms and herbs were believed to heal the ill.
Class 4 have also thoroughly enjoyed our new and improved reading materials, found in our reading corner this week. To further instil reading for pleasure within our class, an array of new books have been purchased such as Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Dork Diaries and Dog Man, along with books written by requested authors such as Tom Fletcher, Liz Pichon and Cressida Cowell.

Week 1
Well done Class 4, for a fantastic first week back at school. Although it’s been a short week, you have all tried your best and settled well within a new class.
This week, children have explored varying texts within Guided Reading. Children have applied their knowledge of VIPERS skills when exploring texts about gaming, poetry and wild life.
In Art this week, children have started to explore optical illusions. We have explored the meaning of optical illusions, along with how they are created.
In Literacy this week, children have been reminded of essential expectations within our writing, such as capital letters, letter formation and legibility.
In Maths, children have focused on place value this week and will continue to do so next week also. Children have explored varying pictorial representations for numbers up to 1000, recapping partitioning and key vocabulary used when learning about place value.
In Science this week, children have completed a pre-assessment for our current topic of electricity. Children have shared their knowledge and understanding of previously taught concepts before exploring further next week.
