Week 5
Children have worked very hard during assessment week this week. Well done for showing resilience, determination and a positive attitude towards learning.
This week, children have explored a setting description called The Swamp. Children have made a prediction of what the text could be about, along with retrieving key information.
In Science, children have explored which materials best block out sound – a continuation from last week’s lesson of planning the investigation.
In RE, children made Christingles and explored the meaning of items used. For example, the orange representing Earth, the candle representing the light of the world and the red ribbon representing the blood of Jesus.

Week 4
This week, children have explored a text about the coastline. This text is a setting description, linking well with our current literacy work. Children have applied their knowledge of VIPERS skills to retrieve key information.
In Literacy this week, children have identified the key features of a setting description, exploring personification, similes and metaphors.
In Maths, children have continued to work on times table and division facts, specifically the 6 times table.
In Geography, children have completed a fact file about North America, exploring physical features and countries.
In Science, children have planned an investigation to complete next week – to research what the best material is to block out sound.

Year 5 St Pius Trip
Year 5 children thoroughly enjoyed their trip to St Pius. During the trip, children explored art, technology and food. Children mixed, prepared and baked their very own Christmas cookies. They also created a template and observed laser equipment in action to create a name label for a box. Finally, children designed and made chocolate molds to enjoy delicious treats at home.
Week 3
This week, children have explored a text about the coastal areas of Yorkshire in comparison to those of California in Guided Reading. Children have applied their knowledge of VIPERS skills to compare many facts and statistics.
In DT this week, we have continued to explore microbits and how to use them.
In Literacy this week, children have completed their very own non-chronological reports including key features previously learnt.
In Maths, children have worked hard to complete multiple step (multi-step) word problems. Children have worked hard to understand what sum needs to be completed when identifying key information within a question.
Y5 children were able to explore art, technology and food at St Pius this week – experiencing an array of equipment and facilities that the setting has to offer!

Week 2
This week, children have explored a text about Biomes within North America in Guided Reading. Children have applied their knowledge of VIPERS skills when exploring key physical features.
In DT this week, we have explored microbits and how to use them.
In Literacy this week, children have identified and explored fronted adverbials, along with researching physical features and landmarks within North America in preparation for writing a non-chronological report.
In Maths, children have explored varying checking strategies to ensure that the correct answer is provided. During this, we have studied the meaning of the word inverse and rehearsed the use of inverse operations as a checking strategy.
In Science this week, children have explored sound, specifically the varying sounds around school and how they are created through particles vibrating.

Well done Class 4, for a fantastic first week back at school.
This week, children have explored a text about North America in Guided Reading. Children have applied their knowledge of VIPERS skills when exploring key physical features.
In DT this week, we have analysed varying timer products, identifying advantages and disadvantages to differing product types.
In Literacy this week, children have identified the key features of a non-chronological report. Children have explored technical and formal language, along with recapping action verbs and writing in the third person.
In Maths, children have focused on the skill of subtraction. Children have studied efficient subtraction, specifically column method and counting on from a given number.
In Science this week, children have completed a pre-assessment for our current topic of sound.
