During the first half of the autumn term, the children settled happily into class as they became familiar with daily routines such as self-registration, tidy-up time and snack time, helping them feel safe and secure in their new school environment. They enjoyed making new friends through play, learning to share, take turns and talk about their feelings, while also sharing stories about their families and home life. These conversations helped the children understand similarities and differences and supported the development of a warm, caring school family where everyone felt valued and included. The children were keen to explore their new environment both indoors and outdoors, confidently accessing different areas of learning such as role play, construction and creative activities, as well as enjoying outdoor play where they climbed, constructed and explored seasonal changes. This sense of belonging supported their confidence and enthusiasm for learning throughout the term.
Settling In
Through books such as 'All Are Welcome' by Alexandra Penfold we welcomed our new Class 1 family.
Families
We explored stories such as 'Under the Love Umbrella' by Davina Bell, 'Peace at Last' by Jill Murphy and 'Owl Babies' by Martin Wardell.
We explored the similarities and differences within families and how each are special and unique in their own way. We talked and shared our thoughts, acted out familiar scenarios and created our own narratives.
Emotions
Books such as Anna Llenas's 'The Colour Monster' allowed us to explore and discuss our emotions and feelings. We used visual cues of a person's face patterns to see how they were feeling and talked about the internal feelings that different emotions can bring. We learnt the names for the different emotions we encountered.
