Class 4 (20256/26)

Autumn 1

Week 1

In Literacy, the children began their unit on Little Red Riding Hood, exploring the features of a traditional tale and identifying different sentence types. They experimented with joining ideas using conjunctions and wrote their own simple sentences to describe the story.
In Maths, the children worked on place value, learning to read and write Roman numerals to 100 and exploring how to partition numbers up to 10,000.
In Science, we began our topic on forces, starting with a practical look at friction and how it affects movement.
In RE, the children read Paul’s teaching from Colossians and discussed the qualities that help us to live peacefully with others.
History lessons introduced the Vikings, sparking great curiosity about where they came from and how they traveled.
Our first PE sessions focused on endurance and agility, with the children testing how long they could maintain their energy during running games and balance challenges.
In Music, we started learning a Roman-themed song.

Week 2

This week in Literacy, the children learned to use subordinating conjunctions and began planning their own story using a story mountain. Their vocabulary choices became much more imaginative as they drafted their openings.
In Maths, the children moved on to representing and partitioning numbers up to 1,000,000 and comparing and ordering them.
Science focused on air resistance; the children designed parachutes of different sizes to see how surface area affects speed.
In RE, they reflected on qualities shown by courageous people and linked these to their own lives.
During PE, the children completed an energetic circuit training session, improving strength, balance, and coordination through a variety of fun fitness stations.
In Computing, they were introduced to weather forecasting and the idea of collecting data to make predictions.

Week 3

In Literacy, the children planned and wrote the opening of their own version of Little Red Riding Hood, using description and dialogue.
Maths lessons focused on rounding numbers and recognising patterns when counting in powers of 10.
Science continued with the parachute experiment, where the children timed their drops and evaluated their designs.
In History, we discovered how the Vikings travelled and began mapping their raids and settlements.
In RE, the children reflected with gratitude on the gifts and talents God gives us and how we can use them to help others.
Art lessons explored tone and how to create 3D effects with shading.
Spanish lessons introduced basic greetings and classroom commands.

Week 4

The children began their next Literacy unit: a non-chronological report about our school. They read examples, identified key features, and practised writing factual sentences.
In Maths, they solved problems involving rounding and explored negative numbers for the first time.
Science moved on to evaluating the parachute investigation and planning a new experiment on water resistance.
RE lessons focused on how people live out their mission in their communities.
In PE, the children built on their fitness work, focusing on speed, balance, and endurance, testing how long they could maintain a steady run.
Music sessions introduced musical motifs, linking them to the Roman theme.

Week 5

This week, the children planned and wrote sections of their non-chronological reports, learning to use fronted adverbials and paragraphs with subheadings.
In Maths, we began our addition and subtraction unit, using place-value charts and column methods to add and subtract large numbers.
Science lessons focused on planning and investigating water resistance. The children created and tested shapes to see which moved fastest through water.
RE lessons looked at Christian marriage, the symbolism of wedding rings, and the children began creating their marriage liturgy booklets.
In Computing, the children explored extreme weather and how forecasts are made.
PE continued with badminton, learning to serve and rally with control.

Week 6

In Literacy, the children drafted their introductions and main paragraphs for their reports, editing and improving their writing to make it flow smoothly.
In Maths, they practised subtraction with larger numbers and used estimation to check answers.
Science focused on investigating water resistance, comparing different shapes and materials.
History lessons explored everyday life in Viking Britain, and the children created detailed comparisons with modern day life.
RE lessons encouraged reflection on scripture and service, linking biblical teaching to modern-day kindness.
Art sessions built on previous learning about tone and texture, and the children created detailed sketches of quality street chocolates using proportion.
Computing explored satellites and weather forecasts.

Week 7

The children completed and shared their final non-chronological reports about our school, taking pride in editing, presentation, and reading their work aloud with confidence.
In Maths, they brought together their learning on subtraction and rounding to solve real-life word problems.
Science finished with a lesson on gravity, and levers/pulleys.
In RE, they explored the Beatitudes and reflected on how they can show love and service in daily life.
History wrapped up with a celebration of all we’ve learned about the Vikings, and the children exploring their favourite facts.
In PE, the children enjoyed a Les Mills Born to Move session (full of energy, rhythm, and movement) as well as showcasing their badminton skills in a one on one match.
Throughout the half term, different children led our Collective Worship each week, choosing readings, leading prayers, and sharing thoughtful reflections.

One family, growing together in love and faith, flourishing in a diverse and ever-changing world. We love, we believe, we shine, we achieve.
