Autumn 1

Week 1

This week marked a very special milestone as our EYFS children began school for the very first time. The children have enjoyed exploring their new classroom, discovering exciting learning areas, making new friends and learning important new routines.

We are incredibly proud of how well the children have settled into school life. They approached their first week with enthusiasm, curiosity and big smiles, showing confidence and kindness towards one another. It has been a joy to watch them begin their journey at St Michael’s and All Angels, and they have all had a truly wonderful first week.

Week 2

Week 2 – Autumn Term

In Week 2, the children continued to explore both the indoor and outdoor areas of our provision, growing in confidence and independence each day. They loved “getting busy” with their learning, developing new friendships and discovering everything we have to offer here at St Michael’s.

The children also began learning important rules to help keep themselves and others safe during play. We introduced our classroom rule, “Choose it, use it and put it away,” helping the children to understand how to look after our classroom resources and why this is important. It has been wonderful to see the children taking pride in their learning environment and showing such care and responsibility.

Our Class Story – The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds

This week’s class story was The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds, a beautiful story about trying your best, believing in yourself and never giving up. Inspired by the story, the children created their own dot paintings, each one unique and special. Through this, they learned that they can achieve anything they put their minds to.

We also learned a special Dot song, which has very quickly become a firm favourite in our classroom and can often be heard being sung with great enthusiasm!

Another wonderful week of learning, creativity and growing confidence.

Week 3

In Week 3, we shared our love of reading as we introduced the children to a range of new books in our beautiful reading area. The children enjoyed exploring different stories and spending time listening, talking about books and developing a growing excitement for reading.

We celebrated our Super Stars of the Week, who had been reading their books at home every day and were able to confidently tell us all about them in school. It was wonderful to see such enthusiasm for reading and to celebrate the fantastic support from home.

The children particularly enjoyed reading The Gingerbread Man alongside other traditional tales. Building on this, we visited our school art and science room where the children had the exciting opportunity to bake their very own gingerbread men. Through this hands-on experience, they developed important science and maths skills, while having lots of fun learning along the way.

Another fantastic week full of stories, learning and memorable experiences at St Michael’s.

Week 4

In Week 4, we shared the story The Leaf Thief and used it as inspiration to explore our secret garden in search of signs of autumn. The children loved observing the changing colours of the leaves and noticing how our outdoor environment is beginning to change.

We learned all about the horse chestnut tree and its conkers, discovering that they are protected by a spiky shell. The children were fascinated by this and enjoyed handling, observing and talking about what they found.

Exploring our school grounds gave the children the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the natural world while developing curiosity and awe in their surroundings. It was a wonderful week of outdoor learning, discovery and new knowledge at St Michael’s.

Week 5

Over the last few weeks, the children have been learning all about themselves and their families. This week, we focused on the importance of our names and learned that God knows each of us by name and that we are a special and valued part of His family.

The children enjoyed playing games to learn and remember everyone’s first name, as well as exploring the idea of family surnames. These activities helped the children to develop a sense of belonging and confidence within our class.

We also talked about how we are a class family, celebrating that we are all unique and special. The children learned about similarities and differences, showing kindness, respect and appreciation for one another. It has been a lovely week of reflection, faith and community, strengthening the strong bonds within our EYFS class at St Michael’s.

Week 6

In Week 6, we continued our learning about families and homes. The children enjoyed creating pictures and building models, using these opportunities to talk about their own homes and families while sharing their likes and dislikes with friends.

We also focused on developing our early maths skills, particularly counting and subitising. The children practised recognising numbers up to 5, using their “fast eyes” to quickly identify quantities without counting. It has been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they engaged with these activities in a fun and playful way.

Another lovely week of learning, creativity and developing key skills in our EYFS class at St Michael’s.

Week 7

This week, the children truly wowed us with their wonderful performance in the class assembly. They confidently showcased the songs, work and stories they have been learning, performing to a hall full of pupils and parents.

The children were absolutely amazing. They worked incredibly hard in the lead-up to the assembly and showed great bravery and confidence when performing in front of such a large audience. We are so proud of every single child for their enthusiasm, effort and courage.

It was a very special moment for our EYFS class and a celebration of just how far the children have already come during their first term at St Michael’s.

Week 8

Week 8 marked our final week of a very busy and exciting first term in school. Over the past weeks, the children have made many new friends and explored all seven areas of learning with curiosity, joy, enthusiasm and a fantastic attitude.

The progress the children have made has been truly amazing. They have settled into school life so well, growing in confidence, independence and resilience each day. We are incredibly proud of how far they have come and all that they have achieved in such a short space of time.

This week, we also enjoyed learning about and celebrating Diwali, the Festival of Light. The children created beautiful mehndi patterns, rangoli designs and diya lamps, and learned about how people celebrate Diwali with family, light and joy. These activities helped the children to develop an understanding of different cultures and traditions, while celebrating respect and diversity within our school community.

It has been a joy to share this very special first term with them at St Michael’s, and we look forward to many more wonderful learning experiences together.

One family, growing together in love and faith, flourishing in a diverse and ever-changing world. We love, we believe, we shine, we achieve.
