Picture News and Catholic Social Teaching

Our school helps develop children's understanding of Catholic Social Teaching in a variety of ways. One of the ways we do this, is through the sharing of Picture News.

In our school, we use picture news to prompt discussion about different topics taking place around the world.

Each week, the Picture News content is taken and turned into a four-part liturgy which is shared in each class. Every class has a scrap book to show their work. We relate the Picture News content to the teachings of Jesus. Each session has a scripture focus and we relate the content to how God wants us to look after the world and live our lives.

Picture News shows a different photo each week which prompts discussion. Each week, one of the British Values is identified to focus on, in addition to a Protected Characteristic and the UN Rights of a Child. The slides are amended to form a Liturgical Prayer session within classes. Each class journeys through the content every week and produces a reflection/piece of work for their class log book.

We encourage our community to get involved with the Picture News focus and themes. Each week, the 'Take Home' page is sent home to our parents so that they can join in the discussions taking place and know the content their children may be talking about.
