Spring 1

Week 6

 

This week, children have explored VIPERS skills of vocabulary, inference, prediction, explanation, retrieval and summary when studying a variety of texts – considering genre, purpose and audience.

 

In Literacy this week, children have started to explore a model text for our new text type – a narrative. Children have studied a short clip of the film Jumanji, as they begin to explore emotions, mood and tone shared within specific scenes.

 

In Maths, children have worked hard when exploring decimals to three decimal places. Children have ordered and compared decimals using a variety of visual stimulus.

 

In Spanish, children have continued to explored animals and a new word of ‘veo’ meaning I see.

York Chocolate Story

 

Class 5 enjoyed visiting York Chocolate Story this week. Children completed a Mayan Civilisation workshop, along with experiencing a guided tour about the development of the cocoa bean from Mexico to the product of chocolate created today.
 

Week 4

 

This week, children have explored a variety of SATs style questions. Children have identified key information within a text and created a short summary of each paragraph, further supporting understanding and retrieval question accuracy.

 

In English, children have started to explore the key features of a setting description. Children have started to collate key vocabulary for a description inspired by the island from How to Train Your Dragon. Children have considered mood and tone gained from ambitious vocabulary.

 

In Maths, children have explored square and cube numbers, along with prime numbers and varying reasoning questions this week.

 

In History, children have explored the reasons explaining why the Romans left Britain and the impacts that still remain today.

 

In Science, children have planned a science investigation to explore how varying exercises increase the heart rate.

Week 3

 

This week, children have explored a variety of SATs style questions. Children have identified key information within a text and created a short summary of each paragraph, further supporting understanding and retrieval question accuracy.

 

In English, children have planned a persuasive text. Children have shared many independent ideas throughout this text, choosing to write a letter to encourage homework daily, the banning of school uniform or even persuading parents to buy them a new phone. Children have applied their knowledge of emotive language, along with consistent use of punctuation.

 

In Maths, children have explored short and long division, including utilising this skill with remainders.

 

In History, children have explored the impact the Roman invasion had on Britain, along with reasons explaining why the Romans left Britain.

 

In Science, children have explored lifestyle choices and varying factors that impact our health and our heart. Children have studied diet, exercise and unhealthy habits.

Week 2

 

This week, children have explored a range of SATs style questions. Children have identified key information within a text, further supporting retrieval question accuracy.

 

In English, children have started to plan a persuasive text. Children were inspired by the book ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’. Children have studied sentence structures, colons, semi colons and emotive language.

 

In Maths, children have explored the skills of multiplication and division. Class 5 have worked hard to multiply and divide decimals and fractions.
