Week 5
This week, children have studied a descriptive text about an enchanted woodland. Class 4 have explored VIPERS skills throughout the week, developing further understanding of the text.
In Literacy, children have completed a piece of persuasive writing relating to their Dojo character or Dojo Island. Children are working very hard with presentation and handwriting throughout this piece of writing, along with focusing heavily on sentence structures.
In Maths, children have studied degrees and angles. Next week, we will progress to using protractors.
In Geography, children have used Digimaps to complete a local history study about our local area. Children have explored how Goldthorpe and surrounding areas have expanded over time, along with its history of being a mining village.
In ICT this week, children have used Scratch to program sound and loop sounds.

Week 4
This week, children have studied a descriptive text about an abandoned house. Class 4 have explored VIPERS skills throughout the week, developing further understanding of the text.
In Literacy, children have continued to plan a piece of persuasive writing relating to their Dojo character or Dojo Island. Children are working very hard to make this incredibly persuasive to varying audiences.
In Maths, children have explored statistics, specifically reading and interpreting tables and line graphs. Children are learning to understand data represented in varying forms.
In Geography, children have explored physical and human features within the local area and what this means for the community around us.
In History this week, children revisited our World War Two topic when visiting Eden Camp. Children thoroughly enjoyed a range of activities, whilst exploring a total of 18 immersive huts.

Week 3
This week, children have studied a persuasive text about joining war. Class 4 have explored VIPERS skills throughout the week, developing further understanding of the text.
In Literacy, children have started to plan a piece of persuasive writing relating to their Dojo character or Dojo Island. Children are working very hard on active and passive voice.
In Maths, children have been further developing knowledge of time, specifically reading and interpreting tables (time difference). We have also started to explore statistics, including bar charts and line graphs.
In Science, children have investigated the permeability of varying rock types and formations.
In Geography, children have explored physical and human features within the local area and what this means for the community around us.

Week 2
This week, children have explored a persuasive text about visiting space. Children have applied their knowledge of VIPERS skills when exploring key features within the text, exploring unfamiliar vocabulary and fluency.
In Literacy this week, children have continued to explore simple, compound and complex sentences. Children have improved varying sentence structures with the inclusion of blue words (co-ordinating conjunctions) and yellow words (subordinating conjunctions), along with essential punctuation such as commas.
In Maths, children have completed a range of assessments this week to further analyse the four operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division within arithmetic. Children have also worked very hard during reasoning maths assessments, further exploring problem solving and reasoning.
In Geography, children looked at the purpose of a compass and how to use it. Children used a map to and compass to find key locations, before creating a map of their very own and challenging a peer.
In RHE, children studied the church community and the importance of prayer. Children created a prayer jar, sharing those that they intend to pray for in the future.
Year 5 children visited St Pius on Wednesday for a history evacuation day. Children explored encrypted messages during a codebreaking session, along with rationing during a baking session. Children also explored propaganda art, encouraging many during this time to grow vegetables.

Week 1
This week, children have explored a persuasive text about the importance of donating to charity. Children have applied their knowledge of VIPERS skills when exploring key physical features.
In Literacy this week, children have looked at simple, compound and complex sentences. Children have improved varying sentence structures with the inclusion of blue words (co-ordinating conjunctions) and yellow words (subordinating conjunctions).
In Maths, children have estimated money using the skill of rounding, along with adding decimals. Children have revisited place value for this unit before mastering a new skill.
In Spanish this week, children have explored new vocabulary such as ‘hace sol’ meaning it is sunny and ‘hace frio’ meaning it is cold. Children practiced rehearsing new vocabulary with a partner.
In Geography, children have started to explore local history and will work our way towards fieldwork within the locality. Children explored Barnsley on Digimaps, studying varying graphs, grids and co-ordinates.
In Physical Education, children have started a new unit of athletics. We talked about key vocabulary such as speed, stamina and endurance when running at differing speeds.
