Week 7
This week, children have read a non-chronological report about the Stone Age. Children have referred back to prior knowledge to respond varying questions, applying skills of retrieval, inference and explanation.
In Literacy this week, children worked hard to explore figurative language and hyphens to include within a character description. Children completed a writing rubric to follow as a checklist.
In Maths, children have explored box method and formal method when completing long multiplication. Children have also progressed onto short and long division.
In Science this week, children have planned their own investigation and made a prediction, along with discussing variables that may need to change with a partner.
In History this week, children have explored Maya culture further, specifically the use of chocolate and corn.
In PE this week, children have completed short netball tournaments with all skills previously learned.

Week 6
This week, children have read an informative text about plastic pollution. Children have applied their knowledge of VIPERS skills when exploring the text to develop further understanding of new vocabulary, prediction, retrieval and inference. Children have also referred to symbols, picture representations and synonyms to help further develop ambitious vocabulary.
In Literacy this week, children have explored the use of colons, semi colons and hyphens.
In Maths, children have focused on multiplying a 2-digit number by a 1-digit number and a 2-digit number by a 2-digit number. Children have explored formal column method and box method for this.
In History this week, children have explored Mayan writing and symbols. Children have looked at logograms and how they were used on codex / codices.
In Spanish, children have continued to explore greetings and responses. Children have rehearsed words such as estoy, muy, bien, asi asi and mal.

Week 5
This week, children have read a non-chronological report about pygmy hippos. Children have applied their knowledge of VIPERS skills when exploring the text to develop further understanding of new vocabulary, prediction, retrieval and inference.
In Art this week, children have continued to explore mixed media and self-portraits. Children have explored tone, tint and contrasting colours.
In Literacy this week, children identified the key features of a character description.
In Maths, children have focused on addition and subtraction, along with formal column method and inverse operation.
In History this week, children have explored Mayan numbers.
In RHE, children have studied the story of Zacchaeus and how he heard Jesus’ call and acted on it, gaining the satisfaction he was seeking.

Week 4
This week, children have read an informative text about electricity. Children have applied their knowledge of VIPERS skills when exploring the text to develop further understanding of new vocabulary, retrieval and inference.
In Literacy this week, children have started to write their own version of Little Red Riding Hood. Children have worked hard to include varying sentence structures and essential punctuation.
In Maths, children have started to explore addition and subtraction this week. Children have focused on mental strategies, formal method such as column and inverse operations.
In Science this week, children have planned their very own investigation and made a prediction linking to our unit of science. Next week, children will carry out their investigations and complete an observation.
In History this week, children have explored Maya religion and beliefs. Children learnt that they believed in multiple gods and completed varying rituals and sacrifices.

Week 3
This week, children have read a narrative about the Titanic. Children have applied their knowledge of VIPERS skills when exploring the text to develop further understanding of new vocabulary, prediction, retrieval and inference.
In English this week, children focused on direct speech and inverted commas including a reporting clause.
In Maths, children have focused on place value this week, exploring problem solving question and analysis.
In History this week, children have explored the Mayan Civilisation looking at how they lived, where they lived and when their civilisation thrived.
In Science, children have constructed and drawn circuits using symbols. Children have included a variety of components within their circuits and investigated why a circuit may be incomplete.

Week 2
This week, children have read explored vocabulary, inference, prediction, explanation, retrieval and summary skills this week when exploring a narrative about a shipwreck. Children have thoroughly enjoyed exploring ambitious vocabulary within the text, alongside key skills.
In Art this week, children have explored self-portraits, poetry and mixed media. This will continue throughout our current unit.
In Literacy this week, children have identified the key features of a narrative, focusing heavily on varying sentence structures, word classes and punctuation to include within our own writing rubric.
In Maths, children have continued to focus on place value this week, reading and writing numbers to 10,000,000 and recapping understanding of Roman numerals.
In Science this week, children have made a simple circuit within our unit of electricity. Class 5 also investigated what would happen to the circuit when additional components were added. Children focused on using accurate vocabulary when explaining their findings.
In History this week, children have created a timeline sharing previously studied time periods, along with our new focus of Maya civilisation.

Week 1
Well done Class 5, for a fantastic first week back at school. Although it’s been a short week, you have all tried your best and settled well within a new class.
In Art this week, children have started to explore self-portraits and mixed media. Children have explored drawing with one continuous line and following step by step instructions to create their very own masterpiece.
In Literacy this week, children have written a short narrative about the summer holidays (this could be fiction or nonfiction). This was to revisit and recap expectations such as capital letters, sentence structures and punctuation.
In Maths, children have focused on place value this week and will continue to do so next week. Children have explored negative numbers and counting in powers of 10.
