Week 7

This week in Literacy, Class 3 explored calligram poems. They experimented with different shapes and styles to represent their chosen themes, and had great fun designing poems that were both artistic and imaginative.

In Maths, the focus moved to capacity. The children learned how to estimate, measure, and compare liquid volumes using millilitres and litres. They took part in practical activities, pouring and measuring liquids to build their confidence and understanding. Real-life problem-solving helped them apply their knowledge in meaningful contexts.

In Guided Reading, Class 3 learned about tornadoes through an engaging non-fiction text. They discovered how tornadoes form, where they are most likely to occur, and the impact they can have on people and places. The children used the text to practise their retrieval and inference skills, and discussed how authors present factual information clearly and effectively. They also made links to descriptive language and imagery, building on what they had been learning in Literacy.

In Geography, Class 3 learned about map symbols and created their very own symbols to use on a map. The children enjoyed designing creative and clear symbols to represent different landmarks and features, and used these in simple map-making activities to demonstrate their understanding.

Week 6

This week in Literacy, Class 3 completed their final character description of the witch from Snow White. After weeks of planning, drafting, and refining, the children brought together all their learning to create vivid and imaginative pieces of writing. The final pieces were impressive, showing just how much care and creativity the children put into their work.

In Maths, Class 3 continued their learning on mass. They deepened their understanding of grams and kilograms through practical activities, including weighing different classroom objects and comparing their masses. The children also solved a range of word problems involving mass, helping them to apply their skills in real-life contexts.

In Science, Class 3 were introduced to the topic of nutrition. They began learning about the different food groups and the role each one plays in keeping our bodies healthy. The children discussed what makes a balanced diet and began to explore how nutrients help with growth, energy, and repair. They also thought about how healthy eating links to looking after our teeth and overall wellbeing.

In PE, Class 3 enjoyed developing their skills in both hockey and dodgeball. In hockey, they practised controlling the ball, dribbling, and passing with increasing accuracy. In dodgeball, the focus was on teamwork, movement, and quick reactions. The children showed great enthusiasm and sportsmanship in both activities, and it was fantastic to see their confidence grow with each session.

Week 5

This week in Literacy, Class 3 continued their work on character description, with a focus on the Witch from Snow White. Building on last week’s exploration of descriptive language, the children began to create detailed character profiles of the Witch. They thought carefully about her appearance, personality, and the impression she gives to others. Using expanded noun phrases, powerful adjectives, and figurative language, the children planned how to bring this vivid character to life in their writing.

In Maths, Class 3 began learning about mass. They explored how to measure and compare different weights using grams and kilograms. Through practical, hands-on activities such as weighing everyday classroom items, the children developed a strong understanding of how mass is measured. They also practised estimating and solving real-life problems involving mass, helping them see the relevance of these skills in everyday life.

In Guided Reading, the children explored the character of the Witch from Hansel and Gretel. They examined how descriptive language is used to create a dark and eerie atmosphere. The children identified powerful adjectives and figurative language that brought the character to life and discussed how the author’s choices influenced their feelings and perceptions of the Witch.

This week in Geography, Class 3 began learning about the physical features of Italy. They located Italy on a map of Europe and began exploring its mountains, rivers, volcanoes, and coastlines. The children were particularly interested in the Alps and Mount Vesuvius and enjoyed discussing how these natural features influence daily life in different regions of the country.

Week 4

In Literacy, Class 3 were introduced to character description, focusing on the Witch from Snow White. They explored how authors use descriptive language to create vivid picture for the reader. The children identified examples of character descriptions, identifying expanded noun phrases, powerful adjectives, and figurative language. They then began planning their own descriptions of the Witch, thinking carefully about her appearance, personality, and the impression she creates.

In Maths, Class 3 began their work on mass and capacity. They explored how to measure and compare different weights using grams and kilograms, as well as how to estimate and measure liquid volume in millilitres and litres. The children used practical activities to deepen their understanding, including weighing objects and pouring liquids to see how measurements change. They also solved real-life problems involving mass and capacity.

In Guided Reading, Class 3 explored Mr. Twit from The Twits by Roald Dahl. They discussed how Dahl uses humorous and exaggerated descriptions to make Mr. Twit a truly disgusting character. The children identified powerful adjectives and figurative language that helped bring his appearance and personality to life. They also considered how an author’s word choices influence the way a reader feels about a character.

In Geography, Class 3 will begin focusing on Italy. They will explore the country’s geography, landmarks, and climate, learning about its location in Europe and the physical features that shape daily life. The children will also look at famous cities such as Rome and Venice, and they are excited to discover more about Italy’s culture and history in the coming weeks.

In Science, Class 3 started learning about digestion and teeth. They investigated the functions of different types of teeth and how they help us break down food. The children explored the process of digestion, from chewing to the stomach and intestines. They also discussed the importance of healthy eating and how to take care of our teeth to keep them strong and healthy.

Week 3

In Literacy, Class 3 completed the final write of their diary entries, inspired by a European travel vlogger. They worked hard to bring their writing to life, ensuring their entries were personal, engaging, and reflective of real experiences. The children focused on including thoughts and emotions, using time conjunctions to structure their ideas clearly. After writing their final pieces, they took time to edit and improve their work, checking for punctuation, spelling, and interesting vocabulary.

In Maths, Class 3 continued their work on fractions, focusing on finding fractions of amounts. They used practical resources and problem-solving strategies to divide numbers into equal parts and worked on applying their knowledge to real-life contexts. The children also started exploring equivalent fractions, using fraction walls and diagrams to help them make connections.

In Guided Reading, Class 3 explored Surviving the Earthquake. They read about the challenges faced by people during natural disasters and discussed how individuals react in emergency situations. The children focused on retrieving key information from the text, making inferences about the characters’ experiences, and considering how people prepare for and respond to earthquakes.

In Geography, Class 3 continued developing their map skills, using atlases to explore Europe in more detail. They worked on identifying major rivers, mountain ranges, and seas, discussing how physical geography influences how people live. The children also practised using compass directions and coordinates to describe locations.

In Science, Class 3 began their new topic on Animals Including Humans. They explored the different food groups and discussed why a balanced diet is important for staying healthy. The children also learned about the human skeleton, identifying key bones and understanding how they help with movement and protection. They enjoyed investigating how muscles work and are looking forward to learning more about how the human body functions!

Week 2

In Literacy, Class 3 continued their work on diary entries, inspired by a European travel vlogger. This week, they focused on writing in the first person and using time conjunctions to structure their entries.
