Autumn 1

Week 8

 

In Literacy this week, children celebrated finishing their non-chronological reports about St Michaels and All Angels Primary School. They proudly read and shared their completed reports with their peers and reflected on what they had learned about formal writing.

 

In Maths, children have built a strong foundation in place value, working with 2-digit and 3-digit numbers. They learned how to represent, compare and order numbers using number lines and partitioning. Towards the end of the term, both Year 2 and Year 3 children were introduced to column addition, beginning with adding two numbers without exchanging to develop a secure understanding of place value.

 

In Science, our topic was Animals Including Humans. Children learned about the human body, skeletons and muscles, as well as the importance of hygiene, diet and exercise for staying healthy. They were fascinated to discover how all the parts of the body work together.

 

In PE, children developed their fundamental movement skills, focusing on balance, agility, coordination and overall fitness through team games, circuits and relay-style challenges.

 

Well done Class 3 for all your hard work! You should be very proud of yourselves.

Week 7

 

In Literacy this week, children have been writing up the final version of their non-chronological report about St Michaels and All Angels Primary School. They focused on presenting their work neatly, using headings and subheadings accurately, and ensuring they included clear factual information throughout.

 

In Guided Reading, children have been reading about mythical creatures. They worked on fluency and explored exciting vocabulary while discussing the features and characteristics that make these creatures unique.

 

In Maths, children have been adding two numbers with exchanging. They used column addition to regroup when needed and explained the process clearly using place value language.

 

In Science, children learned about the importance of hygiene and how keeping clean helps to prevent the spread of germs. They discussed everyday hygiene routines and why washing hands properly is essential.

 

In History, children explored Ancient Egyptian gods and goddesses, learning about their beliefs and the roles each god played in Egyptian society. They particularly enjoyed finding out about Anubis and Ra.

 

In PE, children continued to develop their fitness and coordination through circuit-based activities and team challenges, focusing on improving their stamina and reaction time.

Week 6 

 

In Literacy this week, children have started planning their own non-chronological report about St Michaels and All Angels Primary School. They focused on choosing appropriate subheadings and gathering key facts about different areas of the school, such as the classrooms, playground and school values.

 

In Guided Reading, children have been reading a non-chronological report about biomes. They focused on fluency and understanding key vocabulary such as 'climate', 'tundra', 'rainforest' and 'habitat'.

 

In Maths, children have been adding two numbers without exchanging. They used column addition and place value equipment to support their understanding and explain how the digits stay within their column values.

 

In Science, children learned about the different types of muscles in the human body and how they help us move. They were fascinated to discover how our skeleton and muscles work together.

 

In History, children explored Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics. They had the opportunity to decode messages and even write their own names using hieroglyphic symbols.

 

In PE, children continued developing their fundamental movement skills, focusing on balance, agility and coordination through team-based fitness games and relay-style challenges.

Week 5 

 

In Literacy this week, children have been introduced to non-chronological reports. The WAGOLL was based on Hogwarts, and children explored the layout, features and formal tone of an information text. Next week, they will begin planning their own non-chronological report about our school — St Michael and All Angels Primary School.

 

In Guided Reading, children have been reading a non-chronological report about Europe. They focused on identifying new vocabulary and answered comprehesnion questions. 

 

In Maths, both Year 2 and Year 3 children were introduced to adding and subtracting 1s, 10s and 100s. They used number lines and place value charts to support their understanding and worked on explaining how the value of each digit changes.

 

In Science, children continued learning about Animals Including Humans, exploring the different types of skeletons that animals can have and identifying which animals have endoskeletons, exoskeletons or hydrostatic skeletons.

 

In History, children learned about Ancient Egyptian pyramids and discussed why they were built. They found it fascinating to learn about the process of mummification and the beliefs the Ancient Egyptians had about the afterlife.

Week 4

 

In Literacy this week, children have begun writing their own versions of Little Red Riding Hood. They focused on using interesting vocabulary and correctly punctuated simple and compound sentences to make their writing exciting for the reader.

 

In Guided Reading, children focused on the Great Adventurer, working on expression and fluency when reading aloud. They also answered comprehension questions to show their understanding of the characters and events.

 

In Maths, children have been ordering and partitioning numbers. Year 3 children focused on ordering numbers to 1000 and using flexible partitioning to show different ways to represent numbers. Year 2 children worked on placing numbers to 100 on a number line, focusing on tens and ones.

 

In Science, children continued their learning on Animals Including Humans, this week focusing on the importance of a healthy diet and identifying the different food groups needed to keep our bodies healthy.

 

In History, children learned about Ancient Egyptian pharaohs and explored why they were so important. They particularly enjoyed looking at images of famous pharaohs such as Tutankhamun.

Week 3

 

In Literacy this week, children have planned their own version of Little Red Riding Hood. They focused on creating exciting characters and settings, using simple and compound sentences to make their writing more engaging.

 

In Guided Reading, children continued exploring The Zookeeper, developing their vocabulary and inference skills by answering deeper questions about the text.

 

In Maths, children have been working on comparing and ordering numbers. Year 2 children focused on comparing 2-digit numbers using inequality symbols, while Year 3 children compared and ordered 3-digit numbers on number lines and in written form.

 

In Science, children continued the topic Animals Including Humans, this week focusing on naming the bones in the human body and learning about the skeletal system.

 

In History, children began exploring daily life in Ancient Egypt. They learned about Egyptian homes, clothing and food, and compared them to modern life today.

Week 2 

 

In Literacy this week, children have started a narrative unit. The WAGOLL was based on Jack and the Beanstalk, and children explored the structure and features of a traditional tale. They will be planning to write their own version next week based on Little Red Riding Hood.

 

In Guided Reading, children have been exploring the narrative text The Wilderness. They focused on improving their fluency and vocabulary, as well as answering questions to deepen their understanding of the text.

 

In Maths, children have been representing numbers to 100 using a range of visual and practical methods. Year 2 children focused on number bonds to 20, while Year 3 children continued to build confidence working with 2-digit and 3-digit numbers.

 

In Science, children were introduced to the topic Animals Including Humans, with a particular focus on the human body. They began identifying and naming different parts of the body and discussing their functions.

 

In History, children were introduced to Ancient Egypt. They learned who the Ancient Egyptians were and began exploring what life was like during that time.

Week 1 

 

The class book for this term is The Creakers by Tom Fletcher.

 

In Literacy this week, children have been learning about simple sentences and compound sentences. They were able to identify and create their own examples during whole class activities.

 

In Maths, children have focused on place value. Year 2 children explored 2-digit numbers, while Year 3 children focused on 3-digit numbers. They practised identifying the value of each digit and used number lines to compare and order numbers.

 

In PE this week, the focus was on fundamental skills and fitness. Children took part in a range of activities to develop coordination, balance and agility through movement-based games.
