Spring 2

Week 8

 

This week, children have studied a set of instructions named ‘How to survive a Viking quest’. Class 4 have explored VIPERS skills throughout the week, developing further understanding of the text.

 

In Literacy, children have explored new punctuation and grammar such as colons and semi colons. We have also recapped our understanding of time adverbials when writing instructions on How to Return a Lost Thing, inspired by the author Shaun Tan.

 

In Maths, children have explored adding and subtracting fractions. We have also looked at adding fractions with differing denominators, applying our multiplication knowledge further.

 

In Science this week, children have completed a post unit assessment. In this assessment, children recap all prior learning from our unit of Animals including Humans. Children have explored bones within the body, diet, the digestive system, teeth, food chains and much more.

 

In Geography, class 4 have completed a post assessment on our unit of the physical features of Peru. Children explored continents, physical features and key vocabulary linking to Peru.

 

In Spanish this week, children have learnt new vocabulary such as feliz Pascua  meaning Happy Easter, along with the Spanish translations for Holy Week and the many events that happened during this time. We explored Spanish processions and floats shared with many towns and villages.

 

Thanks again to all able to attend our Palm Sunday assembly on Monday.

Week 7

 

This week, children have studied a set of instructions named ‘How to be a Scary Monster’. Class 4 have explored VIPERS skills throughout the week, developing further understanding of the text.

 

In Literacy, children have created their very own persuasive text, whether this be an advert for a holiday or toy, a trip or experience day, or even an endangered animal leaflet. Children have tried their very best to include key grammar and punctuation within the text, such as emotive language and rhetorical questions.

 

In Maths, children have explored improper and mixed number fractions. Children have also explored equivalent fractions and number sequences with fractions.

 

In Science this week, children have leant about animal life cycles. We looked at the life cycles of a mammal, amphibian and insect to realise that animal life cycles can differ drastically,

 

In Geography, class 4 have studied the water cycle. The class explored key vocabulary such as evaporation, condensation and precipitation.

 

In Religious Education, children have looked at acts of service during Passover. Children discussed how the disciples may have felt during this time and what acts of service they gained from such experiences.

Week 6

 

This week, children have studied a persuasive text named Join Beowulf to Save Our Kingdom. Class 4 have explored VIPERS skills throughout the week, developing further understanding of the text.

 

In Literacy, children have started to plan their very own persuasive text, including many key features previously explored. Children have chosen whether they wanted to write a leaflet about an endangered animal, or an advert for a holiday, experience or toy / game.  

 

In Maths, children have explored unit and non-unit fractions, along with using a fraction wall to study equivalent fractions. Towards the end of the week, children explored improper and mixed fractions when learning about fractions larger than one.

 

In Science this week, children have explored the digestive system and teeth. Children explained the purpose of varying body parts using scientific vocabulary.

 

In Geography, class 4 researched the key characteristics of a volcano. We linked our knowledge to the Sabancaya volcano in Peru.

 

Our prayer leaders have continued to deliver our virtue to live by this week – forgiveness.

Week 5

This week, children have studied a persuasive text called Adopt an Orangutan. Class 4 have explored VIPERS skills throughout the week, developing further understanding of the text.

 

In Literacy, children have explored emotive language, along with passive and active voice. These skills will later be applied to our persuasive writing.

 

In Maths, children have started to explore fractions. Children have explored familiar vocabulary such as numerator and denominator, along with unit and non-unit fractions.

 

In Science this week, children have studied food chains, applying scientific vocabulary such as predator and prey.

 

In Geography, class 4 researched the key characteristics of a mountain. We linked our knowledge to the Huascaran Mountain in Peru.

 

Our prayer leaders have continued to deliver our virtue to live by this week – forgiveness. We discussed the liturgical calendar and how we are able to consider many opportunities for forgiveness throughout Lent.

Week 4

 

This week, children have studied a persuasive text called Visit California. Children have explored VIPERS skills throughout the week, developing further understanding of the text. Children have retrieved key information, explored unfamiliar vocabulary and made many links to history along the way.

 

In Literacy, children have started to identify and explore the key features of a persuasive text.

 

In Maths, children have continued to explore division, specifically dividing a 2, 3 and 4-digit number by a 1-digit number.

 

In Science this week, children have explored food groups, diet, carnivores, herbivores and omnivores, along with studying the varying ways in which animals obtain food.

 

In Geography, class 4 researched the key characteristics of a river and linked this to the Amazon River due to our focus area being Peru.

 

Our prayer leaders have continued to deliver our virtue to live by this week – Love and Charity. We discussed the liturgical calendar and how we are able to carry out acts of love and kindness.

Week 3

 

This week, children have studied a diary entry named Global Warming. Children have explored VIPERS skills throughout the week, developing further understanding of the text. Children have retrieved key information, explored unfamiliar vocabulary and made many links to history along the way.

 

In Literacy, children have started to plan their very own explanation text including facts, explanations and key punctuation.

 

In Maths, children have continued to explore efficient multiplication and division. Children have explored the written method, along with area model and short division strategies to work efficiently.

 

In Science this week, children have identified muscles within the body and the purpose that they serve.

 

Our prayer leaders have continued to deliver our new virtue to live by this week – Love and Charity. We talked about how this links well to our liturgical calendar and how we are able to consider many opportunities to share love and give to others, whether this be via donations, time or kindness.

Week 2

 

This week, children have studied a diary entry named Seed Dispersal. Children have explored VIPERS skills throughout the week, developing further understanding of the text. Children have retrieved key information, explored unfamiliar vocabulary and made many links to history along the way.

 

In Literacy, children have explored clause structures and the use of commas this week – in preparation for writing an explanation text next week.

 

In Maths, children have continued to explore efficient multiplication and division. Children have explored the written method, along with area model to work efficiently.

 

In Science this week, children have identified bones within the human body and their functions.

 

In Geography, class 4 have researched the physical features of Peru. Next week, we will compare our research to our previously studied focus of California.

 

Children also visited church on Ash Wednesday, many received a blessing marked with Ashes. As we start our Lenten journey together, we will take time to reflect and pray, thinking about sacrifice, discipline and giving.

 

Our prayer leaders launched our new virtue to live by this week – Love and Charity. We talked about how this links well to our liturgical calendar and how we are able to consider many opportunities to share love and give to others, whether this be via donations, time or kindness.

 

Well done to many Sacred Heart children for your fantastic efforts during World Book Day. We explored the book 'Who You Were Made To Be' and discussed the inclusion of all, being proud of who we are and the importance of being unique.   

Week 1

 

This week, children have explored a text about how penguins are adapted to their living environment in Guided Reading. Children have applied their knowledge of VIPERS skills to compare many facts and statistics.

 

In Design and Technology this week, we have explored food produce around the world and how climate affects the food that we have available.

 

In Literacy this week, children have studied the key features of an explanation text. Children have explored several explanation texts to explore punctuation and grammar aspects.

 

In Maths, children have worked hard to complete an array of multiplications. Children have been working on multiplying a 3- or 4-digit number by a 1-digit number, along with using a box model for multiplying a 2-digit number by a 2-digit number.

 

In PE this week, children have learnt the key skills required to play rounders. As we progress, we will focus on throwing, catching and batting. Year 4 children enjoyed their first swimming lesson this week too.

 

In Science, children have explored bones within the human body and how muscles serve many purposes within the body.
